watching her fall in love

i have watched my best friend fall in love 3 times

the first time

as she talked about him

i saw her eyes crinkle up at the the corners

like the sleeves of her favourite sweater

around her wrists

and as i listened to her talk

i realised

i could map the creases of her eyes

and let myself become lost in them

the second time

as she talked about him

i saw her hands

with the chipped nail polish that flashed

before my eyes like diamonds

and as i listened to her talk

i realised

i wanted nothing more than

to hold her hands to my chest

the third time

as she talked about him

i saw the curve of her lips

as they spoke

shifting like the waves of the ocean

and as i listened to her talk

i realised

i wanted to feel her lips against mine

soft and warm

and as i listened to her talk

i realised

i had fallen in love with her
