Waves of Pain
Location
Everything starts out mellow, tranquil, calm.
There’s only slight evidence of a headache,
but a small ripple doesn’t bother me.
Stress and the wind pick up throughout the day,
and the waves become those you could surf on.
I’m still nowhere near drowning in the pain,
but I know that the pressure is building.
And then it begins; the sky starts to roar.
Waves crash into my skull; I’m pulled under.
Lightning illuminates my agony.
In the light, I find a lifebuoy: Advil.
It holds me up until I’m washed ashore.
I have discovered an island of dreams,
and the sea resets for another day.
