Way Down

That heavy metal sound,

the monotony of machinery,

fills my head and cracks my skull

and sucks the life out of my soul

A pickaxe drags against the ground,

dust rises and fills my mouth

The King demands a bigger haul

but we have already given it all

It’s dark and cold

and bittersweet

that we work to death

to earn our keep

I close my eyes

and hope and pray

tomorrow will be a new dawn

and bring a new day

The dark seems lighter than it was before

and I see a light,

dim but bright

and I hear a simple tune

a melody so soft and sweet

but strong enough to pierce my heart

I start to hum

and soon realize

tears are forming in my eyes

I want to start singing

and dancing too

and shine a light on the world for you

Everyone should know the song

the one we all depend upon

the song that drives us to the end

The song makes us alive again
