"The Way I Act"

"The Way I Act"

On the day that it happened, I was only twelve years old.

Though it was April, that day was cold.

I came home from school

Nothing unusual

But “something’s happened in Boston” I was told.

Only a block from the building where my uncle had been

A bomb had exploded, causing a scene.

No one knew how many died

Showing their Patriot love and pride

But the carnage on TV was unlike anything I’ve seen.

As the night went on, the news showed bloodshed

And the deaths of two adults and one kid.

The suspects had dashed

Buildings were smashed

And the next day, an officer was dead.

Growing up around Boston, that could’ve been me.

I could have been there April fifteenth.

Who would’ve thought

This day would’ve brought

Violence to lives usually carefree?

To me, this day had such an impact.

I learned to value life; that’s a fact.

These victims couldn’t have guessed

That day would be their last

And that has influenced the way I act.
