The Way We Know It

Take the long road
down to the ocean
into the water desert.
Sink for a while, knowing
that when you come up for air
there will be no air left.

Walk the long path
up the mountain
and sing a song you love.
You won't be singing for long
when it gets too cold for you
to breathe; there's no air here
for you, either.
