We are..
We are the people who were brought upon this land for nothing more than labor.
Shouts “Get to work, niggers.” or feel the lashes on our backs.
We are the people of every shade.
Mocha, tan, chocolate and more.
We are the first generation, enslaved in a new land with no sense of guidance.
We are the women of these people,
raped and forced to birth children into the world for monsters who live in our heads.
We are the people whose chains are not physical but mental.
We can see freedom, even taste it and yet we stay in place.
Fear of the unknown world because violence and hate is all we’ve known.
We are the people who have fought back and gained their independence.
We are the men and women who still fight for the lives of future generations.
Music, family, happiness, home-cooked meals are what we enjoy.
We are not “video vixens”, ”athletes”, “deadbeat fathers”, “single mothers”, “strippers” or “gangsters”.
We are “actors”, “bankers”, “President”, “advocates”.
We will not conform to the ignorant belief regarding our people,
solely because we ARE BETTER than that.
We are the people whose fight is still not over.
We are people of color..
