We are here

If one were to enter the classroom They would notice one thing immediately There is only one black student in the room That student is me For the past 4 years I have attended this school white majority, black minority At times it is hard But there is one thing that I have learned Although I might be outnumbered I have learned to appreciate the power of one It took one woman to stand up for what she believed in on the bus that day It took one man to decide to fight for equality by means of non violence It took one little girl to find the courage to enter a school where she would be the only black girl Just one It is because these people and many others that I am here It is because they found the strength within themselves to keep going that I am here It is because these people and other African Americans fought for equality that I am here I am here I will make my presence known because I am here I will make a difference in the classroom In the halls And in the lunch line Because although there are few of us in the school We are here We are finally here.
