We Are Waiting On Me

Location

We are waiting on me to discover,

that being single since 1997 and being born in the same year is ok.

That not owning or wearing makeup saves time and money.

That standing up for myself just because I don't act like the stereotype

is a good thing.

And not standing, not defending myself when called an "Oreo"

is an insult to my heritage.

Just because I am intelligent, beautiful, and successful

doesn't mean I'm white, "inside" or out.

Just saying.

We are waiting on me to discover,

that I do things I shouldn't.

That I laugh at people who can't sing in church.

That I sneak candy into the movies.

And that I "borrow" all of the quarters out of my Dad's change jar.

We are waiting on me to discover,

that dancing in the mirror while home alone is normal.

That I  should have been born in the 80's.

That thinking mean things about people sometimes,

but still being on the final ballot for most courteous is a feat.

And that being a silent leader is the best kind.

We are waiting for me to discover,

that making excuses for others isn't always the best decision.

That I have one true friend who lives eight hours away,

but is closer to me than any of my "friends" here.

And that this individual will never let me down.

We are waiting on me to discover... Me.
