we need God, but God doesn't need us.
half past the hour when the world became godforsaken many years ago
yet humans still strutted the earth
an unwitting scourge of the universe
fallen from grace without a sound
the world shrieked to a halt
gasping for breath in the unholy silence
before breaking into a mighty roar
a moan
a broken whimper
a tremblingly whispered denial
far from reach
striking the muffled earth in silence
like the bolts of lightning in their souls
and still the clock ticked on
still the earth spun
and the sun slipped away as the clock chimed "ungodly"
while the unwillingly beating hearts of the bitter survivors nearly stopped
as they slumped between the wreckage of the heroes among us
like forgotten gods, raised up on jubilant shoulders as their feet touched the soil
now uprooted from the backs of their admirers like felled trees
and the eyes of the conquerors smoldered like triumphant hellfire
quiet yet scorching, joyous
reminding us that while God shriveled in our minds like a wilting plant as he was starved of faith
our hearts were always singed by fear of the devil
and the human race neglected the bits of God in them
to try to drive their inner devil out
but to no avail
for mankind still gazes at the horrible things wrought by their hands
and screams
my God, my God
why hast thou forsaken me?
in the devil's own voice.
but God was never yours.
