We Need More Than A Teacher

As a teacher, to us, you don't get it
We think that it leaves you dumbfounded
We'll say what you want to hear
Regardless of how it may have sounded
But what you do not get
Or perhaps may never understand
Are all the pressures you put on us
From the homework, quizzes and tests at hand.

You barely seem to care
About what else is going on
Did Katie tell you she's pregant?
Did John tell you he lost his mom?

Did Jake tell you about his car accident?
Did Marissa tell you she broke her arm?
Did you know Jill got into a fight last period?
Or how at home, Tim self-harms?

But that's the least of your concerns
Your priority is to teach
I understand, I really do,
But know my life is not a beach,
I'm not just playing in some sand

And neither is Katie, John or Marissa,
Or Tim, Jill, or Jake
But understand there is a lot more than meets the eye
Because we do in fact, have a lot at stake.

I understand that we are students,
And if we don't learn, you'll be damned
But sometimes we need more than a teacher
I really hope you understand.
