we never dated

We never dated, so I have no claim, No right to feel the sudden, quiet shame When I see you smiling, leaning in to hear The way other girls whisper in your ear. I tell myself it shouldn't bug me so, I have no title, nowhere left to go, Yet every laugh you share, every casual glance, Feels like a cruel, unnecessary dance. It makes me want to scream into the dark, To tear my eyes out, leave a jagged mark, To pluck them from my sockets so I’m blind And leave your effortless, cruel charm behind. I know it’s aggressive, a bit too intense, A dramatic plunge over reason’s fence, But it’s the truth of how I ache inside— A burning truth I no longer can hide. It shouldn't matter, though I bear the cost. We never dated, so nothing was lost. Yet trapped in my head, I sit and I pine, Wishing you were, though you never were mine.
