Weeds and Wheat: A Sonnet to Life

Disaster, suffering, fear and so much pain;

Alive we strive, but die every day,

Of good, sweet Jesus, how can you ordain,

Though blameless, for other’s sins we must pay?

The Lord is there with our inheritance,

Bequeathing light and love and life so pure,

With songs of praise, creation joins His dance;

But in this joy, have we really a cure?

Though fear and faith and love and lust abound,

This existence Adam’s offspring bear,

Among the weeds still wheat may yet be found;

God loves us, yet the blame is ours to share.

From bad comes good and truest joy from strife,

Suffering on earth shall reap eternal life.
