The Weight of Poetry

Poetry is not just

the scratch of pen upon paper

or the songs of birds whistling through the forest

or the lament of a lost love

or the giggle of a small child on a pleasant afternoon

or the coming of an intrepid storm

or the wind whisking away crisp autumn leaves

or the twinkle of stars that spatter the night sky

or the smooth rocks consumed by a babbling brook

or the blossoming forget-me-not.

Poetry is the thoughts that have spilled from my mind

leaked through the pen

splattered across the paper

to record, in script, my spirit.
