We're Not From the Streets

We sit in our rooms and listen to music

Indie pop with synthetic beats and wailing

Punk lyrics that make us feel deeper

Than the housewives cursing on tv

Makes us feel deeper listening to bands who

Only speak in easy whispers, who croon to the

Screeching of a crying guitar, makes you think hard

About chord changes and liberation and makes you

Feel deeper than that girl at the stoplight bopping her

Head to that Top 40 song you know all the words to

You we know all the words to those songs, but we’re deeper than that

Hipster girls much cooler than that, much smoother than that

Making an art form out of being weird

Making an art form out of nonconformity, for the sake of being cool

Writing poetry and reading comic books instead of the latest trilogy

Writing poetry and reading classic books instead of just watching the movie

Sometimes we just write poetry

We speak geek

We do our homework before it’s due

We never tie our canvas shoes

Hated sports, because sports hated us

But we made it cool

We got good grades

Had brains in spades

We sit in our rooms and listened to music

We dreamed when it seemed like the world was out to get us

We laughed, always before the punchline, and never got the joke

We always misspoke

Awkward and strange, and mostly plain, but we had minds of our own

Yeah we have minds of our own
