What I Cannot Live Without
Foolish it would be
to choose one material possession.
For peace of mind takes no physical form.
Tangibility it lacks.
But rather, it manifests inside the mind and soul.
And believing I knew of a single idea,
an idea most suitable in retaining my sanity,
providing my happiness,
would be a great display of arrogance.
A person then, that must be it.
But unfortunately,
a place of permanence in our lives
no person can guarantee.
Some stay longer than others.
That is, if you do not leave them first.
This is the cruel reality nature imparts.
It seems no answers remain.
Yet, in my eyes,
the answer is painfully clear.
The one thing I cannot live without,
as torturous as it may be,
is the knowledge that I will never know the answer.
Happiness is evasive.
And all who have preceded us have chased it.
Some grab it and never let go.
Some find it only to lose it and find it again thousands of times more.
Others never quite find it.
And not once
has happiness's exact source been located.
The best we have done is guess.
With all of this in mind it seems that,
rather than painstakingly searching for the answers,
all I can do
is live.
