What I Know So Far
Let it be known:
I am still learning how to love,
I still don't have all the answers,
And that loving somebody
Makes life feel much,
Much longer.
And depending on the kind of relationship you're in,
You will either enjoy
Or absolutely dread
The way life drags.
...
A healthy relationship for me
Is a bottomless flower pot
Where you grow so fragrantly-
Where your roots
Look like the most graceful lightning strike
And you don't worry about no weeds.
If there is no room for you to grow as a person
Then you are trying to bloom
On barren land.
That relationship
Is a waste of time with a smile on its face.
A romanticized dead zone.
...
A healthy relationship
Is not jealous
And makes room for everyone else in your heart.
Your mom
Your friends
Your co workers
Your gods
The versions of you that you hate
The versions of you that they hate
If your relationship
Feels a lot more like boot camp
And a lot less like a never ending family vacation from loneliness
Then I suggest you leave.
If you have to love on your tiptoes
Then I suggest you leave.
Because you can get your heart back
But your time is a withering currency
...
A healthy relationship
Is understanding.
It holds onto its tongue
Until you've finished telling your side of the story.
It shares its umbrella with you
Even though you dragged the rain cloud in.
Always remember
That your unpredictable matrimony runs on the power of two
Meaning that your failure, or success
Relies on sincere choice.
...
Healthy relationships,
Are honestly a totally subjective ideal.
But the bottom line
Is that as long as you two
Are happy
As long as you two
Are honest
As long as your tongues twist the same way
And your hearts speak the same language-
As long as
It feels less like work
And more like love,
You have nothing to worry about.
