What I was Told

You will never be a sports agent.
Sports agents are men.
Females will never be a reliable agent.
You’re stupid for thinking you’re going to be an agent one day.

What I was told when I said I wanted to be a sports agent.

Your dreams are unreal.
You’re never going to make it.
You might as well give up.
What are you doing with your life?
You’re crazy to think if that’ll actually happen.

What I was told on a daily basis.

You cannot live in the city.
It’s too expensive.
You’re going to get shot.
OR
Start doing drugs
AND
Become an alcoholic.

What I was told when I wanted to move to Chicago.

Universities are too expensive.
You don’t need to live on your own.
You’re going to party too much.
You’re going to drop out.

What I was told when I wanted to go away to college.

I am so proud of you.
You saved so much money.
You gained your Associate’s.

What I was told when I graduated from Community College.

You’ve become so responsible.
You can do it.
You’re such a hard worker.

What I was told when I went away to a university.

I believe in you.
You can accomplish anything you set your mind to.
No one is stopping you, but you.

What my mother has been telling me everyday since I was a child.

Sometimes you have to take a step back and listen to the people who care about you most, and listen to their advice, because in this harsh world that we live in, people are just waiting for you to fail. The only way we are going to make it out alive is listening to the ones who truly care about us, and stick by our side, no matter what.
