What If?

What if I didn’t have to run From Shadows haunting me at dusk? What if I could shake them off at once, And be a ghost without the mask? What if I could change my white attire, And leave behind my eerie choir Of evil hearts and empty souls Whose voices reach the darkest holes? What if I could fly my way up higher And pay my dues to Knights of Fire, Who guard the sky through every night And shield me in the silent fight? Then maybe I could go back home And ask the Shadows how it was To live like I did years along, Surviving all, but still alone.

Hi! I'm a student and a huge fan of poetry! I don't usually talk about my feelings in front of others and poetry allows me to express myself without worrying about judgement or misunderstanding. I hope that you'll be able to find your safe haven in my poems, too ;D

Rich metaphors: shadows, ghosts, white attire, eerie choir, Knights of Fire; personification; sustained symbolic language.

I really struggled with this poem, because even though I knew what my soul so desperately wanted to say, my mind just couldn't find the right words. So maybe that's the central idea: no matter how hard we try to leave the shadows of our past behind, they're innately ingrained in our being. Perhaps the end goal is not to forget your past traumas, but instead to reacquaint yourself with them, to understand that even if you wished you didn't have them, they shape you and your personality as much as your bright memories do. And maybe that darkness wishes the same thing as you do: to be seen, to be heard, to be loved...
