What It's Like to Be a Formally Abused Kid

Just because I’m labeled as abused

Doesn’t mean I scream for your attention,

Doesn’t mean your pity is what I want,

and it doesn’t mean you should treat me any different.

Just because I put up walls

Doesn't mean I can’t see past them,

Doesn’t mean you can’t break through them,

Doesn’t mean you should either.

Just because my head hangs low

Doesn’t mean I want you to hold it up,

Doesn’t mean you can make me happy,

Doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try either.

Just because I hide behind a smile.

Would you have guessed that I was far from normal?

Would you treat me different even though the only thing that changed was your perspective?

Nobody’s perfect, so why keep trying to be?

Simple. So we don’t feel so alone in a fight that we will never win.
