What Is Love?

In kindergarten, you shyly gave a classmate a flower;

Your mother giggled and told you this was love.

In sixth grade, you were captivated by the forbidden allure of your English teacher;

Your friends told you this was love.

In high school, you explored galaxies with a significant other;

Hollywood told you this was love.

Now you’ve found someone who has awakened you to endless possibilities,

When you look into his eyes, all else fades away;

You wonder if this is love.

The small love is obvious in every glance,

When you hold hands, when you kiss goodnight.

Could this truly be love?

But the perfect love is subtler than that;

It is there when no one is looking.

It is there in the quiet things:

When you do laundry,

When he makes breakfast.

When each is gradually building the other into a better person,

When his dreams matter more to you than your needs,

When you are no longer two individuals, but one unit.

Your heart tells you this is love.
