What Love Is
Tell me dear beloved,
Tell me why the mornings seem brighter,
How my lungs feel lighter,
How I think of tomorrow with the hope that you’d be there.
Is this what love is?
There is no malice or animosity in your words,
For they are filled with love and tenderness.
You don’t use me for your own benefit,
Not for your humane pleasures,
Or the upgrade in social status.
Love is not having fear of your presence,
Not fearing your footsteps as you walk down the hall,
My hair never pulled and my eyes never purple,
Because your hands know no cruelty,
Never tainted with blood of those who held you with benevolence.
They only caress the sweet and pure animals of this earth,
Only hold surprises that warm this once small heart.
Because my love for you grows in this very second,
My heart yearns for the warmth of your soul,
For those eyes that hold so much emotion,
Your arms that contain my security and home.
This love we endure is honest,
No judgement between your soul and mine,
For they intertwine and fight through the struggles this apocalyptic world.
While the husband traumatizes his wife,
You relieve my demons.
Is this what love is?
To help each other to fight demons that dwell in our minds,
To navigate the thick icy forest of isolation and despair,
To be the beacon of light and hope in the darkest hours of night,
And to dream of a wonderful future?
Dear beloved,
Love is pure, kind, and true,
Not full of jealousy or bloody lies.
Because I love you,
I trust your soul and your mind,
Because I know you’d never leave me behind.
Let us rest in each other’s arms,
And fight this world together,
And let this love fight forever.
