What Never Shows

It starts with a letter, then a word, then a phrase.

A comment, said without thought.

An emotion that was held inside

Began to press on my heart.

My soul felt sorrow, by body felt pain,

But my mind refused to let it show

My soul began to twist, my mind to break,

My body with restraining effort began to shake.

They begin to shout within,

Louder and louder and louder

Emotions pushed down,

Protected by walls.

Thoughts break free from their prison.

The shouting, oh the shouting!

My mind loses grip, my soul starts to tear,

My body convulses with effort to keep it all in!

A torrent of anger, pain, desire, sorrow all beat inside,

The hurricane of all that is within begs to be let free!

It beats and pounds and crashes and screams-

Oh the screaming! Can’t anyone hear?

Someone stop this maddening pain!

Just listen to my silence, is that not clear enough!?

The pounding, the yelling the tearing the screaming the crashing the pounding the breaking the howling-

the tears. oh, the sweet relief of tears!

Such emotion I tried so hard to hide

                                               For fear of seeming weak.

The tears are coming faster now,

Oh, what emotion those tears hold,

What they would say if they could but speak.

They would tell stories,

Explain how I feel at every minute of every day.

                        But no one would hear.

If they couldn’t hear the silent screaming,

                       How would they recognize

         The pain in a tear?

No one sees, no one knows,

Just my mind, my heart and soul,

                              Lie broken and pained.

       But no one will see,

                                                                 And no one can know.
