What Poetry Is About
poetry isn’t about anything.
it’s about you
with your head spinning
& your thoughts discombobulated
it’s about the
meatloaf-faced
lunch lady
with depression & joy in the mashed potatoes
of her curly white hair
& flattened by a brown string net
& it’s about
the tough boy walking
with a hand over his crotch
& the fighting girls
flailing arms & claws & scratching & pulling
at skin &
anger & hissing between their teeth
it’s about
humanity
who e. e. cummings hates & loves
& i hate & love too
& once again it’s
about you
& me
& you again
& us
both of whom look at each other
with the disgusted interest
of a woman with eyes locked at her own reflection
& it’s about
trees teaching us about death
& flies teaching us about death
& sunrises teaching us about death
& sunsets teaching us about death
it’s about
life
it’s about
the blues fueled by love
(which never seems to work out)
tragedy & comedy
mixed up shakespeare style
& poetry is about
everything¬hing poetry
is about [the musings of the soul]
