What Poetry Has Taught Me

What would the world be without poetry?

I think that we would all agree

It would be colorless, bland, monotone, and

Maybe even a little less free without poetry.

Expressing one’s self creatively

Is very important to me.

Sometimes poems and songs

Can elaborate feelings more truthfully.

I’ve never quite been one to paint

Or pursue photography.

But poems, now that is an art form

That is more suited to me.

Portraying my thoughts

Through words written on a page

Can inspire feelings and emotions of all kinds;

Emotions I thought I forgot.

Maybe this is why poems exist:

To remind the world to empathize, to experience, to love;

For these sentiments

Are not to be missed.

Life is full of color and sparks.

A baby’s giggle, a wave crashing against the sand,

The rustle of the fall leaves, and the smell of coffee

Are just a few of the world’s many gifts that warm my heart.

With that said, poetry to me

Is not only important but it is also a necessity.

A world without poetry is like a cookie without milk,

Incomplete, dull, and tasteless to me.
