What they told me

What They Told Me, Just Being Me

By:Kenyari Oshinque

“They told me I can’t”

“They told me I wouldn’t make it”

I believed them

I believed I was worthless

Why?

My mind told me it was the truth

My mind lied to me

“They told me I was a statistic”

I believe that

I believe things that would make me insane

Insane in the membrane

Stupid I know

I’m not Forrest Gump

“But I know how he felt”

It’s a good thought if he could see my thoughts and feelings

Tom Hanks is a great actor, but he doesn’t know

Doesn’t know the pain people with mental disabilities feel,

“Normal people don’t feel that pain”

We all know

It may be different stages in life, but we all go through it all.

“We all be hungry for knowledge”

For the truth

“They told me lies”

Lies that messed me up

I am me

I’m not them

“I counteract what they told me”
