What True Love Is

A healthy relationship

Should make one glow, and grow

Both on the inside

And on the outside,

When someone does something good for you

Without wanting anything in return

Or when they point out your mistakes

Not to hurt but to help you grow,

When someone treats you respectfully

Even if they disagree with you

By honoring your opinion with their attention

And hoping you will do the same,

When someone genuinely cares about your wellbeing

Whether you are well or unwell

And they laugh or cry with you

But not at you,

When someone lifts you up with their words and actions

When you are at your lowest point, or even at your highest

Because it is then that you most need a caring companion

To celebrate with you or to just listen,

When someone thinks of you and anticipates your wishes and needs

Even before you ask

Because they care so deeply about you

And want to see you thrive,

When that person always brings, not a frown,

But a warm smile on your face

Whenever you think of them

Or when you are around them, whether you are happy or sad

When someone does all these things

Or at least most of them

Then you know that they really care about you

And that they really do love you.
