What would I change?

I walk into a room and see white,

White bed, white blanket, white face.

I look at the beautiful eyes of a little girl,

As her parent's coddle her and hold her tight.

I shift the papers in the blue folder entitled,

Sarah Fischer, Age 4, Leukemia.

She looks up at me and smiles.

I smile back, but, I don't know why.

I hide the test results, as I walk closer to the bed.

I give Sarah a hug and pray.

I pray that the monsters inside her will go away.

I pray that she will remain strong,

Despite her losing battle.

And I pray that I can one day be like her,

Selfless, caring, and empathetic.

I pull the blankets back to check her IV,

and see the bruises on her arm.

I feel a huge sense of guilt,

Knowing full well that I was the cause of them.

Maybe if I had been more careful she would have been ok,

Maybe if I had performed the surgery earlier, she would have been in remission,

But I can't beat myself up for it now,

There's no point.

I look at her and suddenly feel a sense of hope,

She will fight this cancer,

She will fight this monster and she will win.

It is at that moment, that I realize my purpose in life.

I know that I can't change what happened to Sarah,

But I know what I can try and change.

I can try and change her future.

I can work to make sure she isn't taken by cancer.

I can work hard so that she can walk out of her bed knowing that she is ok.

I can work selflessly to make sure she can be the best person she can be

And not have to worry about her Chemo or the medication she has to take the next morning.

Regardless of what people think, cancer is just a monster.

We all need to be strong like Sarah,

Be strong and hard working.

We can end cancer forever,

We can make sure no one lives the life Sarah had to live,

And we can make sure no one is tormented by this horrible disease.

And it won't happen at once, but with everyone's help,

We can work to make a safer home.

With everyone's help,

We can change the world.
