What's a Flaw?
It's funny. How many times the word perfect is thrown out into the world like everyone has the same definition for it. Like it has a universal meaning. Like we all think of the same thing or person when we her this simple word. "perfect". It's comical. How many people describe people as flawless. As having NO flaws. But yet they are the same people who will turn around and say the cliche quote "nobodies perfect". The thing is I don't believe in being flawless because what is a flaw? Ok yes the definition of flaw is, a mark, fault, or other imperfection that mars a substance or object. But what someone thinks is an imperfection may not be what I think an imperfection is. But the truth is as a society we are coherently raising young girls and boys to think that perfect and flawless is one thing that one thing that we see in TV shows movies magazines and social media time and time again. Young girls and boys will alter and cover up their so called imperfections to get attention from their piers. Little girls and boys are degrading themselves before they even know what degrading means. Little girls and boys are not loving who they are because they want to be somebody else. The sad thing is when I say little I mean little because these boys and girls are 8 9 10 years old and they already have these false thoughts in their heads. As a society we need to coherently change that. We started it. We end it. Because the simple fact is these thoughts are taking people's lives and as a society we can not afford another life being taken another way from us. Now I know that I'm supposed to be talking about an aspect of myself that makes me flawless. Well here's the thing I don't think I'm flawless. Because like I said I dont know what a flaw is to make me flaw-less. But what I am is the best person that I can be. Nobody is going to tell me that because I'm black I'm not beautiful. Because I'm 5' 5" I'm not tall enough. Because my eyes are dark brown they are not pretty enough. Because I don't look like the people on the magazines I will never be in the magazines. Because...because what I'm not perfect enough for you? Well guess what I have finally come to the realization that I like myself the way I am. The thing is I have never thought of the simple words perfect and flawless in this way. I was always the one singing "I wake up flawless" even though I cant sing. And to be completely honest I never had the self confidence to even think these things about myself let alone right them down and speak them. But from this day on I will look at myself in a new light. Brush way the clouds that have been blocking my sight. Wipe away the tears that have blurred my vision. And take it upon myself to just start living. Because now when I look in the mirror I like what I see. And hell I am me. And me is all I want to be.
