What's Inside of Me
I’m not much for appearances,
There’s no beauty inside
That fixed up, gorgeous photograph
That is trying to hide
The person who I really am
With my scars and fears and faults.
There’s more to me than people see,
Behind my many walls.
I’m the girl who gets distracted
When she tries to clean her room,
And ends up giving concerts
To the dust pan and the broom.
I’m the girl who hugs her mom
Each morning when she wakes up
Because sometimes it’s nice
Just to know that you are loved.
I’m the girl who stays up late
So she can dream before she sleeps.
Who cries in the shower
So no one else can see.
I’m the girl whose cheeks turn red,
And makes everybody laugh.
The girl who cannot stand
To see anyone else sad.
I’m gullible and I’ll believe
Almost anything I hear
Because I like to see the good,
But sometimes it’s just not there.
I’m the girl who plays for hours
On the piano and guitar.
Somehow writing music down
Sets something free in my heart.
I’m a girl who always looks
Straight ahead when I drive,
But glances in the rearview
To know what is behind.
So many things have led me
To be the girl I am today.
From unwanted heartbreaks
To the pictures that I’ve saved.
The ones that were unedited
Where I didn’t strike a pose.
The ones where I was laughing,
Perhaps at a joke?
You can see the little tear
Making it’s way out of my eye.
I’m bent over laughing
With my smile oh so wide.
That picture makes me think
Of who I really am.
I’m the girl who sings in the car,
Who loves strawberry jam.
Who makes homemade cookies,
But eats some of the dough.
I’ll never be perfect,
But there’s one thing I know.
The pretty, fixed up pictures
That people put online
Will never show the beauty
That is really inside.
I’m taking off my filters
So everyone can see
The beauty that really counts
Is what’s inside of me.
