When asked to write a scholarship poem

When asked to write a scholarship poem

I sit on my couch in a stupor

as uneducated as a gnome

drawing inspiration from a movie blooper,

"How long has it been?" I think to myself

"since I have written a stanza?"

when I think back to a 'P' bookshelf

in a school during the days of Bonanza!

"Oh, it can't be that hard" I reason

"I used to be so good at such feats."

Yet when I try to write on the pleasantries of the season

I find I am no Keatz.

While Poe writes his poems on the bleak and grim

and Seuss writes of all things childish fun

I know my chances of getting a scholarship are slim

when there are poet contestants many a ton.

Of one literary heart I am sure to win

for her judgement is swift and true

my poetry skills to her are anything but thin

the intellect of my mother my poem will woo!

So here I labor at the mercy of the judges

Hoping for a stroke of genius to come

with my bold application I hope they lack in grudges

and reward my poetnessless with a comfortable sum...
