When the city starts to

When the city starts to drift to sleep I lie with my eyes partly open,
And I wonder if I were to whisper all these shy things in my head
If they would dance across the night and reach you in your bed.
I wonder if you, too, are hiding beneath the covers,
Wrapped in your own thoughts and hoping you had said
All the things you wanted before you find me
Dead.
