WHEN A FRIEND FORGETS HOW TO BE ONE
We were a story that wrote itself—
Laughter stitched between the days,
Secrets shared like whispered vows,
A bond that felt too strong to break.
You were the place I ran to
When the world sharpened its teeth.
I trusted you with the softest pieces
I didn’t dare show anyone else.
Friendship like ours, I thought,
Was a promise without signatures—
Just the unspoken truth
That we would guard each other’s hearts.
But somewhere between then and now,
Your honesty grew thin.
You learned how to smile while hiding knives,
And the warmth you offered
Turned into cold avoidance.
My trust in you—
It cracked like glass under a sudden weight.
Not because of one loud betrayal,
But the quiet ones—
The ones that come disguised as jokes,
As “I forgot,”
As whispers behind my back
Tearing at my name.
You said I was important—
Yet I watched you choose others
To stand where I once stood,
While I tried to convince myself
It didn’t hurt to be replaced.
What broke me
Was not losing a friend—
But losing the version of you
I believed would never leave.
I replay everything sometimes—
The nights we stayed up learning life together,
The silly dreams, the fearless plans,
How we swore that nothing
And no one
Could tear this friendship apart.
But trust isn’t magic.
It’s maintenance.
And you stopped showing up
Long before you walked away.
Now I carry the lesson carefully:
That not every friend
Is meant to stay a lifetime,
And not all loyalty
Is reciprocal.
Still, I hope you remember
How deeply I cared—
Not with bitterness,
But with a quiet acceptance
Of what we were
And what we can’t be again.
Because healing isn’t forgetting—
It’s learning to love the memories
Without letting them reopen the wounds.
I’m grateful for what was good,
I release what became painful,
And I move forward
With a softer heart—
Not weaker,
Just wiser
About who deserves
Access to my trust.
