When I Finally LIstened

A faint chorus of voices whisper a chant at me through the murky waters,

Trying to be heard.

It’s a whisper that rhythmically becomes a shout,

Aching to be heard.

But I turn a blind I to the sound and don’t address

What was always meant to be heard.

But this year has changed me.

I have read the signs.

I have followed the trails.

I have divvied up wrong from right.

I have had my taste of adversity and overcome it.

I have listened.

And now that once distance chorus of voices is at the forefront of my mind,

Everyday getting a little stronger.

I speak words to my fellow classmates because I know I can.

I have grown closer to them because the voice,

All this time,

Have been screaming at me that I should.

That I should break this shell they call shyness

And be the senior I was born to be.

This is who I am.

This is who I always was.

And it had never dawned on me

Until I had finally listened.
