When I Grow Up
When I grow up I want to be blind so I can hear the beauty of the world around me and when I open my eyes it’s like I’m experiencing light for the very first time.
I want to be deaf so I can learn people’s personalities from their actions and not those contraptions that we call mouths. I want to be a rebel.
I want to live carefree and forget all the rules they’ve taught me.
I want to go to school obtain the highest degree possible and then, then become a teacher because then I’ll know I’ve made a difference in tomorrow.
I want to gain a hundred pounds and become obese so that I can feel the world judging me. I want to lose the weight then eat again with no fear of what people think.
I want to become a waitress so I can meet all types of people and realize that everyone has a tale to tell worth telling.
I want to spend not save, don’t discriminate against gays and I expose the ways of hypocrites. I want to be the girl your mother hates because I hold all the traits that she does. I want to fall in love catch amnesia then fall in love again just to relive the moment.
When I grow up I want to be written down as miscellaneous because society can find no other word to define me by. I am cautious but brave, confident but humble, sweet but outspoken, wise but still searching for wisdom.
I don’t have any tricks for you today, any rabbit hats, acrobats, dance moves for you today. When I grow up I want to hear a poem. A poem about the light that takes too long, the teacher that grades too hard because they know your capabilities, the check you didn’t cash on time; the song you hate but can’t stop singing, the mother who abandoned you, the doctor right before the abortion, the brother who’s in jail, the eviction notice in the mail.
I want to hear a poem, about the girl who stole your heart and got away, the man who never called and left heartache at your front door. I want to hear a poem that gives me hope in today and strength for tomorrow. I have learned to color outside the lines, that good things don’t last forever or maybe they were never good in the first place.
I want to hear a poem, I need to hear a poem about the girl who stands on stage and allows you to hear her poetry, feel her poetry, judge her and read her like an open book. I want to hear a poem where periods and commas dance because words give them life.
I want to hear a poem that speaks of everything so that I don’t have to write anymore. When I grow up I want to be as bare and as clean as the paper before the story.
I want to work until my body won’t allow it so that my hands can stand for something; I want to start a revolution.
I want to live, I want to laugh, I want to love.
When I grow up I want to have a tale to tell worth telling all.
