When I Was Just Ten...
I met this girl when I was just ten
She was pretty, thin, and tall
While I would have waffles for breakfast then
She would tell me to have nothing at all
This girl was nice, she never stalled
She had not one single flaw
She had the smallest frame I’d ever seen
I would stare at her in awe
I met this girl when I was just ten
She was perfect and never loll
While I just sat there next to her
Ugly, fat, and small
This girl was perfect and it was true
Skinny, shiny, and new
Maybe if I kept her around, she’d make me perfect too
This girl stayed with me when I was eleven
I decided to keep her around
She told me that burgers were no longer heaven
And they were making my face too round
This girl I met would not mislead.
I could always count on her to stay
Other things in my life would leave
But she would never stray
I had made this girl proud when I was twelve
When I stopped eating breakfast at all
She told me I was starting to look pretty good
And my neighbors could even recall
When I was thirteen this girl got bossy,
Telling me what to do.
She reasoned that what I was doing wasn’t costly
Plus it was nothing new
This girl made me work harder.
She even gave me advice
So what if I’m crumbling under the pressure?
My health is the only sacrifice.
When I was fourteen this girl got worse
She was telling me what I could eat
I acquiesced myself to be coerced
At lunch I would stare at my feet
And now, this girl, she’s still around
And others notice her too
She taunts me at lunch and keeps me bound
I’m struggling to see what to do
I met this girl when I was just ten
I am deeply scared of her now
But what scares me more
Is I don’t want her to leave
I am lost without her around…
