When You Fall

My friend, I see you're tired

It's been a long day for both of us

Come sit with me by the window to watch the rain

We can cry together

I knew you'd be home late so I made dinner just for you

I wasn't sure if you'd have eaten yet

But just in case, here it is -

Your tears mingle with the salt of the soup

I'll hold you tight until they dry

You can have my bowl, love

Tomorrow I'll drive you to work myself

And I'll be there early to pick you up

No more sitting out in the rain

Waiting for your lover who never shows his love

My lovely, I'm here!

Talk to me, I'm all ears

You say he says "I love you" before yelling in your ear

You say he says you can't have friends and talk to none but him

You say he says he does so much for you because he loves you

But Emily, that isn't love

You know that isn't love, my love

Let me help you hold the weight

Of all the things that crush you

Let me be the one who shows that everyday I trust you

I'll be here when you fall, my friend,

And though you weren't for me

I'll hold it not against you since I know the pain you feel

And I've forgiven you, Emily, because I really do love you
