Where I Am From
I am from a home filled with different voices.
Where the walls have all been renewed,
The floors have been furnished from carpet to wood,
And a room made just for the dogs to lounge in.
I am from six girls and one bathroom in the morning.
The “move over I cannot see myself in the mirror”,
The speed brushing our teeth with two sinks,
And the half a mile walk that we take daily to catch the bus.
I am from small hallways.
The tight fitting lockers that were meant to be shared,
When a student thinks it is cool to mock the teacher,
And a three person squeeze for a twenty minute bus ride home.
I am from the table of homework and questions.
When the younger children always ask me for help,
The brothers picking on the little sitter,
And band music being played through the house.
I am from chores that are to be done by five.
The cleaning of the dishes after dinner,
That day’s drama being gossiped in the living room,
And going to our rooms for the night by nine.
I am from a home of guidance.
Parents who encourage their children’s dreams,
Push them forward on positive decisions,
And help them fill out college applications and scholarships.
I am from these moments of family.
An unforgettable experience of life,
With the inspiration of an amazing women,
And moving into the new chapter of my life as a college freshman.ere)
