Where I Am From..
I am street lights and gun fights
Dark shadows that creep along the pavement,
The Bang bang and authoritaive officers.
I am Roosevelt Road,
Crowded sweaty pews filled with sinners.
I am the clay roads of Mississippi, where the cicadas reside in their trees.
Where the wind blows a cool breeze.
I am fried chicken, sweet potato pies and collards.
The black and white photos of strong men and women.
I am bible reading and tender knee kneeling, asking for prayers that always come right on time.
The anomaly of African American standards
College bound not baby bound,
Paper writing not booty wiping.
I am the game changer, innovator and collaborator.
Where I am from , where I have been is because of their past.
Because of their past I am present , the new start to this generation that is falling apart around me.
This is me, the blood in my veins that pump through my heart.
I will always know where I am going, because I know where I am from.
