Where I come from
Where I come from
Its so easy to get stuck
I’m stuck between
who I use to be
who I’m thought to be
and who I want to be
Now to some of you
might of seen this
5”5 girl with the body of a stick
long slim legs but babygirl ain’t have no hips
but her hands worked
she took pride in that
when things got rough she could confide in that
quick to let you know
if you got a slick lip
you could get hit quick
and it wasn’t no denying that
but that’s not who I am anymore
do y’all not see that?
Some of y’all like naw I can't even believe that
But why?
Do I got that mark?
Do y’all really think that I’m not that smart?
Is it because I’m straight out of Zone 15
please tell me what does that mean?
you judge me off a couple people you know
& put us all in the same box
because we share the same zip code?
We're not all the same
we're just all tryna make it
You gotta understand where I come from
It's two paths
& either way you gotta take it
One
There's the man that lost sight of the other path
he believes that no matter what he do he gotta get it fast
Tryna make a quick buck
But what he doesn't understand is that he is stuck
To stuck in his ways
To realize it really could be better days
Because to believe that
If you live by the gun
You gotta die by the gun
but come on now is that really what you finna tell your son
This man became a product of his environment
Ignoring the signs that said
"Now Hiring"
Because he has not 1 but 2 strikes
& now on the path to strike out
Because he is stuck
Two
Then there's the man who
Made a plan
& got out quick
who knew from the jump
Staying in the hood just wasn't it
He may not know how to dribble a ball
Or be the next doctor on call
But he worked
Worked not to be everything he is thought to be
He couldn't let it happen
He refused to get stuck
But is that why y’all judge me?
Because of where I come from
I had to pick a path too
you don't know what I’ve been through
you haven’t seen what I seen
there’s a reason why I got so mean
at the age of 16
I gave up my first child
yeah things got rough
he was my only reason I didn’t have to be tough
he was a part of me
I even heard a couple of his heartbeats
I look at myself everyday
and ask
Who am I?
Who was I to give up
the next Micheal Jordan?
or the next black president?
I know my baby was heaven sent
I just couldn’t give him that life
not at 16
naw not at 16
baby I just couldn’t let us get stuck
But that’s no reason to judge me
man please stop judging me
maybe y’all will understand when I tell you who I wanna be
I wanna be a queen
not a queen that depends on a king
but one with dreams and admirations
who today promises to y’all she’s gonna make it
despite of where I come from
and what I’ve been through
that will not define me
that is not who I want to be
because I am Queen
I am Queen Rosc
I promise never to get stuck
because
Where I come from
is not where I wanna be
so please stop judging me
but watch my path
and stay tuned
because one day
you’ll see the queen in me
