Where I'm From
I am from Aunt Jemima,
from eggs, milk, and bacon in the mornings.
I am from hot sweet delicious maple syrup
off the gray and black granite stove.
I am from smoke alarms ringing while the sunrises,
to pillows flying back and forward through the air
just to stop the loud noise from the alarm.
I’m from the best of the best
staying up all night to finish one assignment
to sleeping my entire break away.
I am from pine cones and sticker bushes on my clothes,
with standing up for hours with the tweezers
and moms eye glasses in hand.
I am from the straight furrowed
and never backing down.
I am from a lot of mixed traditions,
basketball at three in the morning,
and playing in the woods until it was so dark
you couldn’t see your hand in front of your face.
I am from spending my days on the beach
from days spent in my room,
with no entertainment at all
to wishing that I could only fly,
to leave and get away from the madness.
I am from strong believers
a long line of educators with high values
from nights spent crying, thinking all hope is gone,
to days feeling on top of the world,
with nobody or anything able to bring me down.
From firecracker wars on the 4th,
to the best team having the last drinks
I am from a place full of love and care
with someone always there when needed.
these memories are who I am,
they tell where im from.
I am from Demond and Felicia Tripp,
to all my ancestors before me.
