Where I'm From

I am from the garden filled with vegetables of all sorts.
Cucumbers, tomatoes, turnip greens, and squash.
I am from the breeze that blows past the freshly washed and hung
Clothes on the clothesline in summer’s prime.

I am from Punkin’ and Tigger
Della Della, Dave, Josie and Big Tom
More importantly I am from Cuttin’ Joe and Linny
Composed of nations and races who once superior and inferior of one another

I am from the nerves trembling in front of fifty
To the adrenaline rushing in front of hundreds maybe even thousands
From 52 white and 36 black; 23 different notes
To an 8 count and a metronome

I am from the overpowering of White Diamond’s embrace
I am from lipstick stained cheeks
I am from confidence, love, religion, ambition, and generosity
I am the only expert on me
