Where I'm From

“Where I’m From” Poem From a rare not so hood household in which sits in the heart of neighborhood. Ironic that you judge houses based on outer appearance physically, but respect the inner characteristics mentally. From Bump-beds, a toy box, and long couch with a small television set came been vividly seen as you step foot in my miniature room. From a family of 5 with includes: A father Johnny, A mother Lorna, A brother Markeal, A sister Lornesha, and Of course myself, Jonathan. From routines, No Priorities we had to abide by like family dinner session, or even in our leisure time if available an option of shooting hoops. From the simple word saying “Silence”, everyone can focus one’s attention on his or her mistake. “Silence” is meant to apply shame to accompany you until you realize what you did wrong before correcting it. How much courage you have to accept your failures, and take responsibility for and be accountable of your actions. From always knowing how holy my father strives to be as a dedicated minister at our local church, my mother who faithfully sings in the choir, and church-oriented extended family, we all are surrounding by the Word of GOD in some way or another. From not desiring any specific foods to eat. Whatever was edible that my mother prepared, we ate it without a doubt. Regardless of whether I am craving it or not, I seldom want anything at all. From a life-changing transition from my parent’s home into being under the custody of my grandparents, witnessing a fatal heart attack that took the life of my first grandmother “Granny”, the birth of my little sister, Lornesha is the highlights of my childhood memories. From the weather being like it is today. Same ole Memphis weather: stormed yesterday, sunny today, chance of rain tomorrow, partly cloudy the next and any other unexpected prediction. From around the neighborhood, People either participated in the gang activity or had a decent low wage job; some were fortunate to have middle class jobs. Teens were also either affiliating with gangs, hanging around with them girls, or hooping almost every day after school and more extensive on the weekends. From having a passion to excel in sports like basketball, football, and track, finding new things to occupy my time, and doing more of my wants than it is of my needs were all my favorite things that are broad enough to enhance my imagination and brief enough for people to understand my ambition in my life.
