Where I'm from

I am from keychains,

from tresemme mousse and learning new recipes from cookbooks.

I am from the trees surrounding my home.(Tall, Green, creating a shaded area to sit under).

I am from the sunflowers growing outside my front door

While they soak up the sun.

I am from folded one dollar bills on new year's eve and dark hair,

from Cecilia and Fabian.

From Corral and Portillo.

I am from late arrivals and Strong opinions.

From “don’t forget to take a jacket” and “treat everyone as your equal”.

I am from a Catholic family. From attending early Sunday church mass.

I'm from Ciudad Juarez, From posole and buñuelos.

From the forever changing blue green eyes of my grandmother, the long hours spent in the kitchen during holidays with my aunt, and the sports adrenaline rush with my cousins.

I am from the waves crashing across the pier at a smooth pace, the sun shining as my family reconnects with one another, from the booming laughter while reminiscing from past gatherings.
