Where I'm From
I’m from plastic pools full of dirt and grass
From a kitchen counter covered crayola paint and wax paper
I’m from the sweet, warm scent of vanilla and rooms with yellow lighting.
From the comforting sounds of classic music,
Where violins and electric guitars strike the same chord.
I’m from prayers at midnight for protection and grace
And constant reminders to always keep face.
From unprovoked arguments and being a carbon copy
The golden rule and “never starting it, but always finishing it”.
I’m from being terrified of the number 3
And being able to clean the entire house in 10 minutes.
I’m from small town living, with dreams of Better Homes and Garden magazine,
A house full of blondes and too much estrogen.
From walking around the house in high heels that were twice my size,
And wearing sweatshirts twice my age.
I’m from years of a golden childhood with a spirit bright as spring.
From heartache, penny-pinching and giving up dreams.
Bad dad jokes and knowing to never touch the thermostat
But having complete confidence with changing my oil and fixing a flat.
But above all else,
I am from “always and forever”
From “I love you more than life sugar bear”
From “Let me hug your heart back together”
And “Remember who you are and who you belong to”.
