Where I'm From

I am from a home where love is endangered,

From the laughing, the crying, the smiling, the dying.

I am from heartbreak, sorrow, and depression.

(from an ache, heartbreak, and lost feeling)

I am from my grandparents, my sister,

my mother and late father

And the redness of my eyes as i cried

A young child with sad eyes.

I am from music

From something that kept the beat to my heart

I am from singing and dancing

In church, at home, at school

I am from what was my escape

I am from what kept me going and pushing through

I am from the womb of a woman who doesn't care for me

I am from a father who showed change is real

From a broken family beyond repair

I am from the hole from which I am crawling out of

From the hole of the emptiness that resides in my heart.

I am from nothing

A set of parents who weren’t ready

I am from a grandfather who didn’t understand pain and suffering

I am from abuse, neglect, and being forgotten

I am from my past.

I am from running away and rebellion,

From one home to another a life brand new.

I’m from smiling, cooking, and laughing

With my aunt and new friends,

From a new home and new me!

I’m from moving, changing, different homes

From one where there is no love to

One where love has no end.

I’m from fresh paint on new room walls,

The memories I left in my past.

From new friends and a new school

And new clothes and shoes

An always busy day filled with fun.

I feel the bitterness in my heart of my past,

I see my future, as bright as the sun

I feel the sadness of knowing my biggest supporter is gone.

I am from those moments -

In which I realized who I was -

In those moments I found myself.
