Where I'm From

I am from hand sanitizer and foamy wash.

From Bath & Body to Kleenex Tissue.

Now I am from the boldness.

A boldness to walk to the nearest restroom.

Water pouring upon my hands.

Fingers intertwined with a flowery scented wash.

A certain stillness.

Undisturbed by the repetitive reminder.

From “Clean your hands before you eat.”

I know now of the dangers, E.coli and what not.

I am from the Kids menu.

A thin pamphlet with about three options.

Mac & Cheese, Chicken strips, Grilled cheese sandwich.

From the upsetting feeling my mom felt.

A realization that I could no longer pass as a 12 year old.

Now I am from the Adults Menu.
The struggle to choose one thing to eat out of many choices.

Looking for an affirmation.

An affirming nod to go ahead and order the medium rare steak.

The awkward raise of a voice.

Pleading eyes for my parents to just make the order

I know now that I must speak for myself.
