Where I’m From

Where I’m From

I am from the dirt roads of Mexico

Walking to endless destinations

I am from the singing of old voices

And the gift of cookies and soda

For my birthday

I am from the unknown parents

Of my father

I am from the physical image

Of my unknown grandmother

I am from the daughter of poverty

I am from the son of responsibility

I am from the love of two people

And the union of two lives

I am from the embodiment of the American Dream

I am from an arduous field worker

I am from a dedicated mother

I am from a prayer every night before sleep

I am from the sign of the cross

Before I leave the house

I am from “Eres la mayor, eres el ejemplo!”

I am from the protection of my sisters

I am from the pressure to succeed

I am from the need of a better life
