From Where She Came
I am from concrete being the playground and having a million neighbors
Seeing different people every day and forgetting who I met but they remember me
I am from fall and dust yourself off and try again
I am from braids with colorful beads that could last for two or three weeks
I am from hold your ear down or there’s a strong possibility you will get burnt by the curling iron
The smell of Pink Lotion and Suave shampoo being sizzled like fried eggs
I am from buttery Aunt Jemima’s and sweet Alaga
The wafting smell of I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter and scrambled eggs with pieces of slightly burnt bacon
I am from navy blue, khaki, yellow, and white everyday to school
I am from kick ball chain, shuffle heel toe, kick ball chain
I am from if the shoe fits, dance
I am from nothing is hard with God on your side
Don’t have to sit in a pulpit to get the affect of God’s word
I am from Leapfrog and Jumpstart with each grade level up to sixth
Don’t need Hooked on Phonics, just read as much as possible
I am from if you want to be somebody and you want to go somewhere, you better wake up and pay attention
I am from scrape your knee, put alcohol on it, put a little Neosporin, a band-aid and keep it moving
I am from almost being kicked out of my house to making something of myself
I am from kickball in the gym and jumping off a diving board into twelve feet with no fear
I am from cutting up the vegetables for Sunday night dinner and feeling as though I cooked the whole meal
I am from look sexy without showing all your goodies
I am from hold your head high and walk with confidence
