Whiplash

Drugs, alcohol, and pills,
Always up and down like hills,
Giving me whiplash,
Who will you be today?
Who will I be?
Pacing back and forth in your room,
With a feral gleam in your eye,
Not one knew to leave, to get help, not even I,
Ignorance,
As harmful as whiplash,
But somehow even more so.
Who knew you would don this you today?
“No, I have to rip myself away from this,
From your loving, inebriated embrace,
Though you are my father I cannot be here.”
That was the me I decided to be during those early years,
But now I choose to transcend,
I am bigger than all of this,
When the world around me is burned down,
And I look for your beautiful blue-green eyes in the ash,
My eyes dart every second and I get the same feeling,
Whiplash.
All I see is black,
You are not there anymore,
But neither is the me I left behind in the flames,
Like any fiery tragedy,
Only the best may survive and in every moment,
I become the best version of myself,
The person who rose from the ashes,
In your image,
Reserving myself from the wrong crowds,
The wrong decisions, peer pressure at its finest,
I refuse to fall into the same trap,
My future is bright,
And with your help I see the light at the end of the tunnel,
No longer the smoke-filled haze of 2008-2015,
Now the purified air fills my lungs,
Reminding me every day of the person you were meant to be,
And the person I am meant to be,
We are one and the same,
And I could never thank you enough,
Dead or Alive,
Thank you, Dad.
