A whisper

What is one thing you wish you never heard?

What is the thing that breaks your heart

more and more only for trying to move on?

What is the one thing that torments you

All day as you live or all night as you lie awake?

What is the one thing that you wish you never heard?

What is that noise that makes your heart race?

Is it the sound of the car pulling in?

Is it the sound of kid’s laughter?

Is it the sound of a mistake?

Is it the useless words entangled to make a phrase?

For me, it’s the memory of a voice

A whisper

Faint but still present.

I have been told many things

“you are too ugly”

“too fat”

“not smart enough”

“too slow”

“a mistake”

“toxic”

“I hate you”

“Die”

But it wasn’t that

It was the words that fell from his mouth

yet vanished into thin air

the endless desire for it to be true

It was that voice I never wish I heard

The dreams I wish I never had

It was the long awaited “I love you”

The “I’m sorry”

The “I didn’t mean it, come back”

The empty promise that left me broken
